The question of whether or not you can microwave cup noodles has been a hotly debated topic for years. Some companies that make them say it is not recommended to microwave cup noodles. However, there are mixed reports online from other people who have tried it with different results – some say yes while others say no!
So can you microwave cup noodles? Here’s the short answer:
As a general rule, you should not microwave cup noodles. The containers are not microwave-safe, and the plastic may melt or cause styrene from the plastic cup noodle to leach into your food.
Furthermore, if you read the label on the back, you’ll find that most of them have warnings, not to microwave styrofoam cup noodles.
If you’re looking for the best way to cook your cup noodle, here’s a short instruction on how to do that:
Boil some water. Open the lid and take out the little seasoning packet. Pour the hot water into the cup. Close the lid and let it sit for a few minutes. Open the lid and add the seasoning packet. Stir until everything is mixed together well. Enjoy!
The answer above pretty much says it all. But if you’d like to read further, here is a longer answer detailing the dangers of microwaving cup noodles and the best way to cook cup noodles and ramen noodles.
Why Do Cup Noodle Manufacturers Not Recommend Microwaving Cup Noodles?
Now when you buy cup noodles, the back usually has some cooking directions like “Add boiling water” and then in smaller print, “Do not microwave.” This labeling on the packaging is from the manufacturers of Cup Noodles to protect themselves from any product liability claims.
Cup noodles come in two types of cups – Styrofoam cups and plastic cups.
The reason that the manufacturers do not want you to microwave their product is that although styrofoam is capable of holding hot liquids, it is not designed for microwave heating.
Under high heat and pressure created by the microwave, the styrofoam cup could leak styrene, which is a suspected carcinogen, even if you just microwave it for a few minutes.
This styrene could then leach into the noodles you are eating and thus increase your risk of getting cancer. So the manufacturer does not want to be blamed for selling a product that causes people to get sick or even have cancer from it, so they will tell you to never microwave their product.
Moreover, if you attempt to microwave a styrofoam noodle cup, the process can have unintended consequences. The heat from microwaving can warp and distort the small cup. If the cup warps or distorts, it is at risk of spilling the noodles onto whatever surface you have placed it on.
Even small damage in the noodle cup can lead to major trouble. With noodles leaking hot and fast, it’s dangerous just holding onto the dish while you’re eating out of it! I don’t know about you, but I’m not taking any chances with this.
But what about a plastic-type noodle cup?
Another issue that could be a hazard is that if your cup noodle is a plastic-type noodle cup that comes with an aluminum foil lid – the heat from the microwave could cause sparks and start a fire.
What About “Microwave Safe” Cup Noodles?
In recent years, many manufacturers of cup noodles and instant ramen noodles have experimented with making a cup noodle that is “microwave safe.” Nissin cup noodles are one example of this. Personally, I have never tried cooking this type of cup noodles in the microwave so I can’t attest to this. If you want to try it out, just make sure to read the instructions carefully.
If you still intend to microwave your cup noodles, my recommendation is to use microwave-safe cups instead of microwaving the cup noodles directly in the plastic cup. It’s easy to do but a lot safer.
Just add a cup of water to a microwave-safe container and set your cup noodles inside. Microwave on medium level power for 1 minute and repeat in 30 seconds intervals then put the lid on the container. After 2 minutes or after steaming hot and noodles are soft take the container out of the microwave and give it a good stir and the noodles are ready to eat.
What Is The Best Way for Preparing Cup Noodles?
So with all of these issues regarding microwaving a cup of noodles, you are left wondering what is the best way to cook your cup noodles.
Cup noodles are one of the simplest noodle dishes to cook. Here’s the best way to cook cup noodles.
- First, heat up some water until it is boiled. You can boil water in a pot, kettle, or you can also boil the water in a microwave using a microwave-safe container if you want.
- Tear half the lid off of the cup and take out the flavor packet that consists of seasoning and oil.
- Pour the hot water into the cup noodle until the water reaches the cup fill line.
- Close the lid and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes.
- After two minutes, the noodles should be cooked. Pour the seasoning and oil into the cup and enjoy!
Note: Noodles may feel harder when they are first made, but they will soften after about a minute or so.
Adding Vegetables and Egg to Cup Noodles
If you are bored of the normal taste that cup noodles give, then you can add your own little spice and variety like dried seaweed to enhance the flavor of your cup noodle. You could add some plain cooked vegetables and meat in a small container to cook them at the same time as your cup noodles.
You could also add some hot sauce or chili sauce on top of your freshly cooked cup noodles or, add an egg to your cup noodle and microwave for about 1 minute or until the egg is fully cooked. Some people like to crack open the egg before they put it in so that some of the yolk coats their hot noodles!
Here are some of my favorite ways to make instant noodles taste better than ever:
1. Crack an Egg In It
Add a boiled, scrambled, or fried egg to it and stir it in. Better still, crack an egg in it and let it cook in the broth. It’s up to you how you want to eat it!
2. Add Some Roasted Chicken
Thinly sliced roasted chicken goes nicely with any type of instant noodles and ramens. Just roast a piece of chicken and add your noodles just before serving.
3. Sauteed Mushrooms and Ginger
Saute some sliced mushrooms and fresh chopped ginger in a little bit of olive oil and mix it all in with your noodles. This is my wife’s favorite flavor and it goes great with chili flakes as well.
4. Load It Up With Cheese
Cut up some cheese into thin slices and add it to the hot noodles and team it up with garlic mayo or tandoori mayo sauce. This is one great way to indulge in the creamy cheesy goodness!
5. Boil It in Broth
Boil the cup noodles in chicken or beef broth instead of water and team it up with some garlic sauteed in olive oil and Italian herbs such as basil for a beautiful and rich-tasting meal.
6. Add Soy Sauce
Sprinkling in some soy sauce together with a dash of spices and salt is the quickest and easiest way to rev up the noodle’s flavor.
7. Sprinkle Lime Juice and Chili Flakes
Sprinkle lime juice over freshly cooked noodles and then sprinkle in chili flakes for an amazing twist that will have your taste buds tingling. You can also add some salt to bring out the flavor of the lime!
8. Shrimp Cocktail Noodles
This is my sister-in-law’s favorite noodle variation, and it’s so simple to make. Just empty out the flavor packet into a cup, add some hot water, and put in a few cooked shrimp. The shrimp broth cooks the noodles perfectly.
9. Veggies in A Blanket
Cut up a small head of cauliflower into florets, along with carrots that have been cut into thin sticks. Boil them in a little bit of chicken broth and then dip them into your favorite flavor cup noodle as it cooks in the microwave to keep things healthy!
Are Cup Noodles Bad for You, or Good?
In moderation, cup noodles won’t cause any negative health effects. However, since they are low in calories, fiber, and protein and notorious for being high in fat, carbohydrates, and sodium, this means that these instant noodles won’t provide you with the essential nutrients your body needs.
What’s more, frequent consumptions of cup noodles is linked to a higher risk of metabolic syndrome. Obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol are all conditions linked to metabolic syndrome.
To make it even worse, instant noodles are comprised entirely of chemical ingredients and you may not even want to look at the long list of chemicals that go into making these instant meals. It contains chemicals such as, but not limited to, Sodium Benzoate (such as in Soft Drinks), Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) (as an artificial flavor enhancer), and Acrylamide. This will no doubt cause health complications on your body if consumed in excess.
The answer to the question, “Can you microwave cup noodles?” is a resounding no. Although nowadays there exists a microwave-safe cup noodle that can be used in microwaves, there are just too many types of dangers that come with microwaving noodle cups. It is best to eat it the old-fashioned way or not at all.
