Starbucks paper cups are a common sight in offices, coffee shops, and even your home. We drink from them all day long without thinking twice. But what would happen if we microwaved one? Would the heat create something toxic to humans?
In this blog post, we will find out if it is safe to microwave Starbucks cups. I will explore different types of Starbucks cups, and we will see which one is safe to microwave.
Can You Microwave Starbucks Paper Cups?
You can’t microwave Starbucks paper cups. It’s not only Starbuck paper cups but microwaving paper cups, in general, is dangerous.
If you’re looking for the best way to reheat your Starbucks coffee, here’s a short guide on how to do that.
The first thing you need to do is to transfer your coffee into a microwave-safe cup or mug.
Set the microwave power to between 50% and 80%, then heat your coffee for 45 seconds.
Stop the microwave, stir your coffee gently, then give it another 45 seconds. After that, your coffee should be hot enough to drink.
Why You Shouldn’t Microwave Starbucks Paper Cups.
Starbuck paper coffee cups are designed in a way that allows them to withstand hot beverages but not active heating. In other words, they are meant to hold hot Starbucks coffee but not reheated no matter what method is used.
Starbucks paper cups are made up of thick paper or cardboard material, plastic coating, wax, and glue. All of these elements will react to heat in a dangerous way.
For starters, microwaving the paper cup will cause the paper to ignite or burst into flame. Equally dangerous is the plastic coating on the cup. The plastic can leach hormone-disrupting chemicals and other toxic substances into the coffee.
The wax and glue can also leach out due to heat, and this is equally dangerous when consumed by humans. If the glue melts, you will also risk the Starbucks cup falling apart and spilling hot coffee all over the place.
To sum it up, Starbucks paper cups are not meant for heating in the microwave. You should only use them once to hold warm drinks and not for reheating. If you want a microwave-safe cup, you should consider choosing a ceramic tumbler.
A few weeks ago I wrote an article about microwaving cardboard that you can read here. If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend that you do so after finishing this article.
Other Types of Starbucks Cups
The good news is, there are many types of cups sold by Starbucks. Some of them are safe for microwaving while others aren’t. So you have to be cautious when using any type of Starbucks cup because they are not all microwave safe.
Let’s take a look at some of the different types of cups sold by Starbucks.
Starbucks Plastic Cups
I would not recommend heating this plastic cup in the microwave for the same reasons why you shouldn’t heat a Starbucks paper cup. The plastic is thin, and it will melt, burn, or be dissolved by the heat of the microwave.
Starbucks Reusable Cups
Over the past couple of years, Starbucks has introduced a wide range of reusable cups in an effort to become more environmentally friendly. This reusable plastic cup is made from type 5 polypropylene plastic which is considered microwave safe.
However, remember that not all Starbucks reusable cups are made from type 5 plastic. I’ve seen other plastic ones that are not microwave safe. So make sure you read the label to ensure that the cup you are using is indeed microwave safe.
This cute little tumbler from Starbucks is made of high-quality food-grade and BPA-free ceramic material. What makes this tumbler so great is it keeps beverages warm for a long time. Unfortunately, Starbucks tumblers are not safe to microwave because the insulated walls are vulnerable to the direct heat of the microwave.
Starbucks Glass Cups
The first thing you should know about Starbucks glass cups is that they say “not for heating” on the packaging. The reason why Starbucks says glass cups can’t be heated in the microwave is that they are made of glass. The microwave heat will cause them to crack or even shatter.
One way you can use a Starbucks glass cup is to place it in a microwave-safe container. You can then heat the water using the “medium” setting of your microwave until warm.
Starbucks Ceramic Mugs
Depending on the lining and the finishing glaze of the mug, ceramic mugs can be microwaved. To be sure, you can check the bottom of the mug (or the packaging) to see if it is microwave friendly or not.
How To Tell If a Certain Starbucks Cup Is Microwave Safe
Before microwaving Starbucks cups, you should read the packaging to find out if it is microwave safe. If the packaging doesn’t say anything about microwaving, I suggest you look at the bottom or check online for more information.
One place where you can find out whether Starbucks cups is Amazon .com. They have a customer review section where people have written about their experiences using certain Starbucks cups in the microwave.
You can also test for yourself if the cup you have is microwave safe. First, fill the cup (or container) with water and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Then, take out the cup and check to see if the water is warmed up and the cup is still cool enough to hold. If the cup passes the test, then the cup is safe for microwaving.
How to Safely Reheat Starbuck Coffee in a Microwave
As you can see, not all Starbucks cups are microwave safe. So what do you do when you want to heat a cold cup of coffee in the microwave? Here are some steps you can follow to make it boil:
- Step 1: Transfer the cold coffee into a microwave-safe container.
- Step 2: Place the container in the microwave and adjust the microwave power level to the medium setting or level 8 (80 percent).
- Step 3: Heat for 45 seconds increments.
- Step 4: Remove the container from the microwave and stir the coffee. Heat again for 45 seconds until hot.
- Step 5: Carefully remove the cup from the microwave.
Note: One full coffee mug usually requires 90 seconds of heating.
What Is The Best Way to Reheat Starbucks Coffee?
The best way to reheat your Starbucks coffee is to do it the old-fashioned way, the way that coffee was originally made, on a stovetop. The reason this method is most favored among coffee lovers is because the flavor of the original coffee does not get ruined in the process.
To start, simply take any pot that you can find in your kitchen and pour your Starbucks coffee into it. Place the pot on the stove at a low temperature.
As long as it keeps on low temperature, you don’t need to constantly hover and stir the coffee.
Don’t worry about the coffee losing all of the flavors and getting burnt. This is the reason why in the first place we are using the low temperature.
Be patient and don’t rush the process. Don’t be tempted to turn the fire higher. You definitely don’t want it to have a touch of burnt!
Does Reheating Coffee Ruin It?
According to Todd Carmichael, CEO and co-founder of La Colombe, coffee is a one-time use kind of deal. You make a good cup of coffee once, drink it up, and if it gets cold, you make a new cup.
Carmichael said that no matter what you do, “reheating coffee is never as good as the original.” Reheating reorganizes the molecular structure of your coffee and ruins the taste.
